Drunk Driving Kills

DrunkDriverCrash

Drunk driving: it seems no matter how much information and education there is out there on the topic, people still choose to drive after consuming large amounts of alcohol—often with disastrous consequences. Vehicular and boating accidents that could be avoided if people would simply choose abstinence from mind-altering substances occur all too often.

Accidents in Recent News

On land and water, getting behind the wheel of a motorized vehicle can lead to serious accidents with injuries and death. Here in Florida, we’ve had more than our fair share of such incidents. Just a few in recent news include:

  1. When a drunk driver took to the highway in Pace, he travelled along in the center turn lane before careening head on into a sedan driving in the opposite direction. The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver who caused the crash tried to escape on foot.  Police ultimately tased and arrested the intoxicated driver, charging him with DUI manslaughter.
  2. A drunk semi-driver slammed into a patrol car and killed the young deputy who was inside it in March, 2024. The inebriated driver was charged with aggravated DUI resulting in death.
  3. A 16-year-old Lorida teen was killed when a driver with a blood-alcohol concentration of .445 veered across the highway, slamming into her SUV in May, 2025. The driver was charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage.
  4. Tampa police arrested the driver of a pick-up truck in the wee hours of the night after the driver, who was intoxicated, ran a red light and smashed into a vehicle travelling through the intersection.
  5. A charter captain who was driving a boat that collided with a bridge at a high rate of speed in the Florida Keys was arrested for BUI (boating under the influence). The accident resulted in injuries to seven individuals, one of whom was a child. The eleven-year old and one woman were airlifted due to the seriousness of their injuries.
  6. A Florida man was charged with BUI manslaughter after he drunkenly crashed his boat into an anchored sailboat near Key Largo. Four passengers were thrown into the water, and one was killed.

Addressing Injuries and Loss of Life

In addition to the criminal charges that DUI and BUI can bring, many people don’t realize that victims of negligent and reckless drivers can file civil suits, as well. That’s because injuries and the loss of life can result in horrendous costs in terms of time, finances, emotional despair, and pain and suffering. A personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can be a way to recover damages to address the financial costs associated with losses like these.
