Examples of federal criminal charges

Federal crimes are those that have been found to affect interstate commerce. This includes large drug quantities, financial crimes, crimes that occur on federal land and crimes in which a federal employee was a victim. Federal offenses include:

  • Certain types of white collar crimes White collar crimes are often falsely associated only with wealthy people. However, people from all walks of life can be accused of wire fraud, bank fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, insurance fraud and other crimes that fall under federal jurisdiction.

  • Violent crimes — Some violent crimes may be federal offenses depending on the nature of the offense or the victim. Bank robbery and terrorism-related offenses are prosecuted in federal courts.

  • Civil rights crimes — Civil rights violations, such as hate crimes and human trafficking, are federal offenses.

  • Cybercrimes — Cybercrimes range from hacking someone’s electronic devices and fraud that occurs over the Internet to identity theft. Such crimes fall under the jurisdiction of federal courts.

  • Organized crime — Drug gangs, interstate conspiracies and crimes involving criminal organizations fall under the purview of federal law enforcement.

  • Major drug crimes — Federal agencies and courts can investigate and prosecute large-scale drug distribution, trafficking or manufacture crimes. They can also regulate other controlled substances, such as alcohol and tobacco.

Weapons charges and crimes that occur on federal parks, Indian reservations or federal property, such as a military installation or post office, may also be handled by federal agencies.

Federal courts do not follow the same sentencing guidelines as state courts

The sentencing process for federal courts differs from Florida state courts. If you are convicted of a federal crime, the court weighs your criminal history, your likelihood of rehabilitation, the nature of the offense and numerous other criteria according to a set schedule. Judges have some discretion when sentencing defendants and a skilled attorney can argue for a reduction in your possible sentencing range. Our attorneys can explain more about federal criminal charges and the federal justice system.
