Law Enforcement Cracks Down on Reckless Drivers on I-4

In response to a string of fatal accidents, the Florida State Highway Patrol and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department, along with police officers from Altamonte Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary, and Sanford, recently announced a targeted campaign to crack down on speeding and reckless driving in Seminole County on I-4. Following a string of fatal accidents, law enforcement authorities have decided to take the steps that they believe are necessary to prevent the fatalities and injuries that commonly result from motor vehicle accidents, many of which result from reckless drivers.

Traffic Accident Injuries Up 56% From March 2015

Thus far in 2016, law enforcement officials state that the number of people injured in motor vehicle accidents is up 56% over this time last year. The number of vehicle crashes increased by 18%, and whereas there had only been two fatalities by this time last year, there have been six fatalities so far in 2016. The number of fatalities has greatly increased recently. On March 27, 2016, two men were ejected from their vehicle near the I-4 exit on SR 417, when the driver lost control and hit a guardrail. Both men died. Four days later, a 22-year-old passenger was killed on I-4 when the driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed. On the heels of these fatal accidents in Seminole County was a quadruple fatal crash in Volusia County that killed a mother and three children. That crash occurred when a man attempted to cross SR 44 and pulled out in front of the woman’s vehicle, which overturned and caught fire. The male driver has three previous arrests for driving-related offenses.

Results of the Crackdown

During the first three days of the enhanced enforcement efforts in Seminole County, officers wrote 417 traffic citations. Among those individuals cited were two motorists playing “cat and mouse,” a man who was driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone and who was in possession of 14 grams of marijuana, and a 18-year-old who had been driving at speeds of 100 mph or more.
