Three Injured After Motorcycle Crashes in ABATE Toy Run

Tragedy struck the ABATE Toy Run on December 7 when a motorcycle rider taking part in the event lost control of his vehicle. According to law enforcement officers present at the run, the driver failed to make a turn, losing control of his bike and striking a 44-year-old woman, her 22-year-old daughter and her two-year-old granddaughter. The elder woman was transported to Wuesthoff Hospital to receive treatment for her injuries and was eventually released. Both younger victims had to be airlifted to other hospitals; the 22-year-old suffered head trauma and was in critical condition, while the two-year-old required surgery.

The Toy Run was momentarily suspended so that rescue crews could get in and provide assistance to the victims. Police continue to investigate exactly what happened in the accident and why the driver lost control of his vehicle. The motorcycle driver was not injured in the accident, and it was not clear if he would face charges for the events that transpired.

Motorcycles can be dangerous vehicles by their very nature. They offer little protection to the driver, which means he or she is much more susceptible to serious injury in the event of an accident. They also require more skill (and specialized skills) to drive than regular cars or trucks. Losing control of a motorcycle is easier to do than losing control of a car.

If it were to be found that the driver of the motorcycle were somehow negligent in his driving practices, or if he did not have the proper training necessary to be riding a motorcycle, the injured family could have a legitimate personal injury case against him.
