Baby Products That May Lead To Injury Or Death

Crib

Every parent can agree: nothing is more devastating than watching your child suffer.  Protecting our kids is job one, but even the most responsible parent cannot alleviate the possibility of injuries here and there. But what recourse do parents have when poorly designed products that are marketed for their children lead to unnecessary and avoidable injuries?

Finger Amputations

Over 14,000 jogging strollers have been recalled by UPPAbaby after a child’s fingertip was inadvertently amputated due to poorly designed rear disc brakes. Sadly, both Maclaren and Graco have had to recall millions of baby strollers in recent decades due to the same type of issues. Amputations and lacerations have led to untold suffering for dozens of children and their families.

Suffocation and Strangulation

According to Consumer Reports, drop-side cribs pose a hazard to babies.  32 fatalities have been documented to date, along with many other injuries. It seems the removable railing can drop unexpectedly, causing serious injuries or death.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Crib bumpers have been linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 27 fatalities in recent decades.  The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends avoiding such products, which can suffocate infants under two months of age.

Drowning

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports nearly 200 deaths and 300 injuries related to infant bath seats that either tip or that allow children to slip through when left unattended.  The seats apparently provide a false sense of security.  Parents should never leave children unattended in the tub or near water, even for the briefest of moments.

Positional Asphyxiation

32 babies suffered suffocation using the Rock ‘n Play Sleeper according to Consumer Reports. A number of baby seats angle infants at greater than 10 degrees, putting them at serious risk of positional asphyxiation.

 Falls

While pressure mounted safety gates do a good job of keeping little ones from climbing up stairs, they do not prevent falls in all situations.  Instead, gates that are actually mounted to the wall or banister are recommended to prevent serious injury.

Burns

For youngsters who are mobile, humidifiers that expel warm mist can pose a serious burn risk.  Their curiosity tends to motivate them to try to touch the mist, resulting in dangerous consequences.  These devices should always be kept out of reach of children.

Fungi/Bacteria

Although wipe warmers sound soothing, beware of the potential for unpleasant growth: fungi and bacteria.  These organisms love warm, moist environments, so the potential for nasty germs is worth considering before using the warmers.

In the Aftermath of Disaster

Some accidents are no one’s fault.  Some are due to poor supervision.  But if your child suffers a serious injury or death because of a product designed specifically for them, you may wish to pursue a personal injury lawsuit to address the physical and emotional damage. To discuss your situation with Kissimmee personal injury lawyer, schedule a confidential consultation at the office of Salazar & Kelly Law Group today.
