Orlando Bicyclist Killed in Traffic Accident

A 53-year-old Orlando man recently died after being struck by a vehicle while pedaling southbound against traffic on U.S. Highway 1 in St. John’s County. According to police, a 25-year-old driver traveling northbound struck the cyclist with the right front side of her SUV around 9:50 p.m. on September 29. The man was rushed to Flagler Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Any time bicycles and vehicles share the road, there is the risk of a collision. Due to the sheer size difference between vehicles, like the SUV and bicycle in the Florida accident, any collision between them, no matter how minor, could result in serious injuries for the bike rider. Without the protection of a vehicle, bicyclists are at risk for being thrown off their bikes — and helmets and pads only do so much.

Because of the serious threats drivers pose to bicyclists, it is especially important that they actively watch out for these individuals on roads and highways. When drivers are not observant of bicyclists, they increase the chances of an accident. Motorists are responsible for exercising due care when traversing roads and highways, and this duty extends to keeping a proper lookout for bicycles.

On the other hand, Florida law does require bicyclists traveling at night to equip their bikes with lights and reflectors. In the event that bike riders fail to do so, it would be evidence of their own negligence and could possibly serve as a strong defense for a driver accused of negligence.

Both motorists and bicyclists should be careful when sharing the road. If you or a loved one has been injured in a serious bike accident, explore your legal options by working with an Orlando personal injury lawyer at the Law Offices of Salazar & Kelly.
