Has Artificial Intelligence Caused You Harm?

Artificial intelligence (AI): it’s been hailed as the wave of the future. Indeed, AI promises myriad benefits for individuals in particular and society at large. Imagine the medical advances, impacts on robotics, agriculture, and more. Without question, AI will be changing our world. But it’s not all good news: the dangers associated with AI should give you pause.
Consider the Dangers
There are two sides to every coin, and, when it comes to AI, you can’t talk about the mind-blowing possibilities without also giving due consideration to some of the negative impacts. Just a handful of them include:
- No transparency means no clear understanding of whether algorithms may lead to unsafe or biased decisions. This has touched the lives of many—and is widely known to be a problem in the field of facial recognition, for example.
- Automation means job loss. Period. The numbers are already frightening—and projections from McKinsey Goldman Sachs put losses as high as 300 million by the year 2030. Everyone from burger flippers to those in legal and medical fields are at risk.
- Social manipulation occurs as AI algorithms feed social media users’ content with material that supports content that has been viewed by the user previously. On top of the barrage of one-sided information, deep fakes of photos, audio clips, and videos distort reality, making it all but impossible for the average consumer to distinguish between what’s real and what’s altered. Ultimately, propaganda and political messaging can be far short of credible.
- Surveilling the public is something that only happens in places like China, right? Wrong! Here in the United States there are police departments using predictive algorithms to help officers anticipate and predict where crimes will ultimately occur. That leads departments to over-police certain communities—usually in Black neighborhoods. Some consider this a step away from democracy toward authoritarianism.
- Lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) are being designed to independently identify and obliterate targets. But oftentimes they do not consider the risk to the civilian population. Even more frightening: the potential for such tools to get into the hands of bad actors.
- Criminal activity abounds with AI. Child predators generate fake pornographic images of children, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify real cases of abuse. And there have been countless cases of AI letting abusers place the face of an unsuspecting child or adult in a compromising photo. Phone scams are on the rise as well, as AI generates the sound of human voices.
Have You Been Harmed by AI?
